How to make a princess doll birthday cake

Any little birthday girl would love this magical unique princess doll cake for her party, decorated with a real doll she can play with later.

How to make the princess cake instructions

Assembling the princess birthday cake:
1. Bake three cakes in 8-inch round cake pans and one cake in a medium ovenproof glass bowl. Let cakes cool.

2. Cut off the dome off all of the 8-inch round cakes with a serrated knife. (Freezing the cake for about 45 minutes before you cut them will reduce the crumbs).

3. Cut a small hole in the middle of each layer; this is where the princes doll will go.

4. To keep your decorating surface clean while you frost, slide pieces of parchment paper underneath the bottom layer.

5. Using your offset spatula, place a dollop of frosting on one of the layers of cake, and spread it evenly. Place another layer on top, frost it, and place the last layer on top. Frost the top of the last 8-inch round cake and top with the cake baked in the overproof glass bowl (domed side up).

6. Make a crumb coat. This is a thin layer of frosting that seals in the crumbs and keeps the frosting clean and neat. Spread the frosting over the entire surface of the cake. To make the frosting smooth, take a strip of paper, cup it and place it at the bottom of the cake, sliding it evenly to the top of the cake.

7. Spread the frosting smooth around the hole in the top.

8. Freeze the cake for about 45 minutes to set the frosting.

Decorating the princess birthday cake:
1. Once the frosting is set, place a dollop of frosting on top and work your way down. Make the cake smooth using the paper technique, or add texture using your offset spatula. Try a fabric effect by making small swirls in the frosting.

2. Wrap the fashion dolls body with plastic wrap. If the doll has long hair you may consider wrapping that during the frosting process as well, to keep it clean.

3. Insert the princess doll into the hole, and add frosting to fill in any gaps.

4. Fill the pastry bag with pink frosting and pipe stars around the doll where it meets the cake. Cover her bodice with the frosting as well.

5. Add highlights to the dress with candy stars.

6. As a finishing touch, you can add a wand and hat made of paper and candy as well

How to make a lattice top pie crust

We thought lattice pie crusts required engineering or geometry skills, but it turns out all you really need is a ruler and nerves of steel 'til you get hang of it. Lauren Chattman from Pillsbury shows us the secret of how to make a gorgeous lattice top pie crust.

How to make a lattice pie crust

Traditional lattice weave
1. First, let the refrigerated pie crust soften on the counter for 15 minutes, so that its easy to work with. Then roll it out onto the countertop. It shouldnt be sticky, so no flour is needed.

2. Using a ruler, mark off the crust every ½ inch to ¾ of an inch.

3. Using the ruler marks as a guide, cut the pie crust into strips with a pairing knife.

4.Starting from the outside of the sliced pie crust, pick up one strip (the shortest one) and lay it down across one edge of the pie. Selecting every other strip, place them across the pie in one direction with a 1/2 space between each strip.

5. Now for the weaving part: The next set of strips will be facing perpendicular to the first set. Again start at the edge, and as you lay it across the pie, lift every other strip from the first set so the new strip goes over and under every other one. Continue this over and under pattern as you lay down the remaining strips across the pie.

6. Finish off the crust by rolling the edge under. If there are any overhanging pieces from these strips, you tuck them right in.

7. To scallop the edges, push your index finger in between two other fingers to get a crimped edge all the way around. Think push rather than pinch to get the best look.

8. Before baking, place a pie shield or aluminum foil strips on top of the pie crust edges to prevent burning. Remove them 15 minutes before the pie is finished.

Quick & Easy Lattice
A simpler alternative to the traditional lattice weave is to place every other strip across the pie in one direction, then place the remaining strips on top in the opposite direction. This way, you can save time by not weaving every strip. Once baked, the quick & easy lattice looks nearly as gorgeous as the traditional method.

How to make a dinosaur birthday cake

If you're having a dino-themed party, celebrate with an easy Edible Rex dinosaur birthday cake developed by professional baker and cookbook author Liv Hansen for the Betty Crocker Kitchens.

How to make a dinosaur birthday cake

Assembling the dinosaur cake
1. On the first cake layer, cut a slice off of one side. Then in the middle of the flat side of the cake layer, cut a U-shaped piece out to create the dinosaurs belly and legs. Place the layer on a serving platter.

2. Using paper templates, cut a head and tail out of the second cake layer (cut the dome off the top first so its flat). Place head and tail on the serving platter, joining the pieces to the dinosaurs body. Glue the cake to the platter by placing some frosting underneath each piece of cake. Crumb coat the entire cake with a thin layer of green frosting.

3. Freeze the cake for 30 minutes.

Decorate the dinosaur cake
1. Frost the entire cake with another layer of green frosting. Smooth frosting on sides of cake using an offset spatula. Smooth the top of the cake, working from the outside to the middle. Have hot water on hand to clean the spatula as you are smoothing frosting. Dry spatula each time you clean it before continuing to frost the cake.

2. Place flat chocolate disks on the cake to make spots on the dinosaur.

3. Use smaller chocolate candies for eyes and toes.

4. Use pointy candies across the top to create spikes along the dinosaurs head, back and tail.

5. Using white frosting in a pastry bag, make white dots in the center of each chocolate eye.

6. Using white frosting in a pastry bag, draw on a smile. Or, for a scary dino, make teeth by holding the pastry bag in place, squeezing to form a dot and then pulling up to create a point.
